Writing Wisdom: Favorite Memory
Writing Wisdom: Write about a favorite memory.
The holidays are a season of magic—a time when lights twinkle brighter, laughter rings louder, and memories feel richer. It’s the synchronicity of the little things, woven together that inspires the joy we carry into adulthood.
As a child, the holidays were filled with simple yet magical moments. My mother’s soft, sweet, and perfectly iced sour cream sugar cookies were a family favorite. My youngest sister thought if she called them “yucky” cookies, others would be discouraged and not eat them. No such luck; the label failed to keep the rest of us away.
Christmas Eve on the farm was pure magic. We’d listen for the knock on the door, signaling that Santa had left gifts on the porch. My dad, always conveniently out “checking the barn,” somehow missed Santa’s visits. The joy of unwrapping cold presents from Santa’s sleigh was unforgettable.
Today, I find inspiration in those simple yet profound moments. They taught me that the true magic of the holidays isn’t in perfection or extravagance—it’s in the synchronicity of joy, connection, and the traditions that bring people together. That’s why we still bake those “yucky” cookies. I still watch The Nutcracker, remembering the year my daughter danced in the aisle as a three-year-old and the many performances she later starred in herself.
The magic of the holidays isn’t in perfection but in connection. Think back to what inspired you as a child. Was it a special treat, a visit, or a beloved activity? Maybe this is the year to recreate it. Let the synchronicity of old traditions and new inspire the magic you bring to this season.
