Choosing Joy as You Decide What You Carry Forward
Choosing Joy as You Decide What You Carry Forward
You Don't Have to Carry Every Part of Your Past Into Your Next Chapter
Imagine standing at the edge of a new season with a basket in your hands.
Behind you is everything you've experienced—the celebrations and disappointments, relationships and endings, dreams realized and dreams released, mistakes, victories, heartbreaks, surprises, and ordinary moments that somehow changed everything.
You cannot carry it all.
Nor are you meant to.
August, with its images of gathering and harvest, reminds us that a harvest is an act of discernment. We gather what will nourish us. We save the seeds that hold promise for another season. We appreciate what has grown.
And we leave behind what has completed its purpose.
Our lives invite us to do the same.
The question isn't whether your past matters.
Of course it does.
The question is:
What will you choose to carry forward?
Your Experiences Are Part of You—But They Are Not All of You
Every experience leaves something behind.
Some leave beautiful memories.
Others leave lessons.
Some leave scars.
Others leave wisdom we don't recognize until years later.
When something significant happens, it is natural to carry pieces of that experience forward. But sometimes we continue carrying things long after they have stopped serving us.
An old disappointment becomes a belief that we shouldn't try again.
Someone's criticism becomes the voice we hear whenever we take a risk.
A mistake becomes evidence that we aren't capable.
A painful ending becomes a reason not to trust another beginning.
Before we realize it, our baskets become very heavy.
What if choosing joy begins by examining what we're carrying?
Not to deny the past.
Not to erase it.
But to decide what deserves space in the life we're creating now.
Choosing Joy Is an Act of Discernment
Choosing joy doesn't mean pretending difficult things never happened.
It isn't ignoring grief, disappointment, anger, or fear.
And it certainly isn't forcing yourself to feel happy every moment.
Choosing joy means recognizing that you have a voice in what happens next.
You may not have chosen every experience in your life, but you can choose what you take from it.
From disappointment, you might carry discernment instead of bitterness.
From heartbreak, you might carry compassion instead of fear.
From uncertainty, you might carry faith instead of worry.
That is the transformational power of your Soul Story.
You aren't changing what happened.
You're choosing what you will allow it to become.
What Has Become Too Heavy?
There are stories we carry because they have become familiar.
"I'm not a writer."
"I'm too old to begin."
"No one wants to hear my story."
"I should have done more by now."
"I missed my opportunity."
"I'm not enough."
Sometimes we've carried these stories for so long that we forget they were ever optional.
They begin to feel like facts.
But what if they are simply outdated stories?
Imagine placing each one on the table in front of you.
Look at it with compassion.
Ask:
Does this belief belong in the next chapter of my life?
If the answer is no, you don't have to keep carrying it simply because it has traveled with you this far.
You can thank it for whatever protection it once offered.
And then you can put it down.
Harvest the Wisdom Instead
When we release an old story, we don't have to leave empty-handed.
We can harvest the wisdom.
Perhaps instead of carrying, "I should have spoken up," you carry:
My voice matters, and I choose to use it now.
Instead of carrying, "I waited too long," you carry:
Everything I've lived has prepared me for this moment.
Instead of carrying, "I made so many mistakes," you carry:
My experiences have given me wisdom I could not have learned any other way.
And instead of carrying, "Who am I to share my story?" you carry:
My story may contain the very words someone else needs to hear.
Notice how different the basket feels.
The experience hasn't disappeared.
But you've chosen to carry its wisdom instead of its weight.
Joy Makes Room for What's Next
There is another beautiful consequence of putting down what no longer serves you.
You create space.
Space for curiosity.
Space for creativity.
Space for new relationships.
Space for writing.
Space for unexpected opportunities.
Space for synchronicity.
Space for joy.
We sometimes think choosing joy means adding something to our lives.
Perhaps it begins just as often with releasing something.
Joy may enter through the space created when you stop carrying an old expectation.
When you forgive yourself.
When you decide perfection is no longer required.
When you stop waiting for permission.
When you recognize that the woman you are today gets to make different choices than the woman you were yesterday.
What Will You Put in Your Basket?
Return to that image of yourself standing at the edge of a new season.
Your basket is waiting.
What do you want to place inside?
Perhaps you choose courage.
Compassion.
Creativity.
Curiosity.
Gratitude.
Forgiveness.
Hope.
Wisdom.
Trust.
Your voice.
Your dreams.
And, of course, joy.
These are the treasures worth carrying.
Because your next chapter doesn't need every detail of your past.
It needs the wisdom your past gave you.
Your Soul Story Writing Invitation
Take out your journal and divide a page into two sections.
At the top of the first section write:
What I Am Ready to Release
Allow yourself to name the beliefs, expectations, regrets, fears, and old stories that have become too heavy.
Then write:
What I Choose to Carry Forward
For everything you release, identify the wisdom you want to take with you.
Perhaps:
I release the need to prove myself. I carry the knowledge that I am already worthy.
I release regret about how long it has taken me. I carry gratitude for everything I've learned along the way.
I release fear that my story doesn't matter. I carry the belief that my words can make a difference.
Then complete this sentence:
As I step into my next chapter, I choose joy by...
Don't overthink your answer.
Let your soul respond.
Your Next Chapter Is Waiting
Your Soul Story isn't simply a record of where you've been.
It is also a declaration of where you are choosing to go.
You can honor the woman who lived through every chapter before this one without requiring her to carry everything into the next.
Keep the wisdom.
Keep the courage.
Keep the compassion.
Keep the lessons.
Keep the memories that warm your heart.
And make room for something more.
Choose joy.
Not because every chapter has been easy.
But because after everything you've experienced, you now have the wisdom to decide what deserves to travel with you.
