What if Gratitude is More Than Counting Your Blessings?
What If Gratitude Is More Than Counting Your Blessings?
November has a way of inviting us to slow down.
The days grow shorter, the air cools, and the brilliant colors of autumn begin to give way to a quieter landscape. Nature seems to remind us that beauty exists in every season, even when it looks different from what we've grown accustomed to seeing.
As Thanksgiving approaches, conversations naturally turn toward gratitude. We begin thinking about the people we love, the opportunities we've enjoyed, and the blessings we've received.
But I've been wondering about something.
What if gratitude is about more than appreciating what we've been given? What if it's also about recognizing who we've become?
Think about that for a moment.
When was the last time you expressed gratitude for your own courage? For the difficult decisions you've made? For the times you kept going when the outcome was uncertain?
We often overlook those gifts because we're so focused on what comes next.
Gratitude Begins with Awareness
One of the most meaningful discoveries I've made through my own Soul Story is that awareness changes everything.
When we pause long enough to observe our experiences, we begin noticing details we previously overlooked.
A conversation that gave us courage.
An unexpected invitation that opened a door.
A friendship that appeared during a challenging season.
A decision that seemed insignificant at the time but eventually changed our direction.
These moments become part of the fabric of our lives, quietly shaping the women we are today.
Yet how often do we recognize their significance?
I grew up on a farm in Southern Minnesota, where the changing seasons were part of everyday life. Autumn meant gathering the harvest and preparing for the months ahead.
Looking back, I realize the harvest wasn't simply about what grew in the fields. It was also about the patience, persistence, and attention the growing season required.
Our lives are much the same.
We plant seeds through our choices, relationships, and experiences. Some flourish quickly. Others take years before we recognize what they've given us.
And occasionally, what grows surprises us.
Discovering Gifts in Unexpected Places
Throughout my life, I've experienced moments that certainly didn't feel like blessings when they happened.
Facing breast cancer three times was never part of the story I imagined for myself.
Yet those experiences pushed me to reconsider how I wanted to live, what mattered most, and why sharing my story mattered.
I wouldn't describe the diagnoses themselves as gifts. Today, I can recognize the wisdom, clarity, and determination that developed as I navigated those chapters.
That's an important distinction.
Gratitude doesn't require us to pretend difficult experiences were wonderful. It invites us to recognize what we've learned and appreciate the strength we've discovered along the way.
Sometimes, the most meaningful transformation begins when we look at a familiar experience from a different perspective.
We discover that the story we've been telling ourselves isn't necessarily the complete story.
Recognizing the Woman You've Become
As we approach the end of another year, I invite you to consider the woman you were when 2026 began.
What did she hope to accomplish?
What worried her?
What did she believe about her abilities?
Now consider the woman you are today.
Perhaps you've developed greater confidence. Maybe you've learned to establish healthier boundaries, speak more openly about your needs, or give yourself permission to pursue something meaningful.
Perhaps your greatest accomplishment isn't something you can measure.
Maybe it's simply that you've learned to trust yourself.
Those discoveries deserve acknowledgment.
Gratitude becomes especially powerful when we extend it inward.
Instead of focusing exclusively on everything we still want to accomplish, we can celebrate the wisdom we've already earned.
A November Invitation
This month, I encourage you to begin a different kind of gratitude practice.
Rather than simply listing things you're thankful for, write about the experiences that have shaped you.
Consider the relationships that have influenced your choices, the challenges that have revealed your strengths, and the moments that reminded you of what matters most.
Give yourself permission to recognize your own evolution.
Because sometimes the greatest blessing isn't something that happened to us.
It's discovering the extraordinary woman we've been becoming all along.
