Harvest the Wisdom of Your Life
Harvest the Wisdom of Your Life: What Will You Carry Forward?
Discover how the experiences that shaped your past can illuminate your purpose, deepen your wisdom, and inspire your next chapter.
October has always been one of my favorite months.
Growing up on a farm in southern Minnesota, I witnessed firsthand the rhythm of the harvest season. Fields that had been planted and nurtured throughout spring and summer were finally ready to yield their bounty.
The brilliant autumn leaves, crisp morning air, and changing landscape reminded us that another season was drawing to a close.
Harvest was a time of gathering, gratitude, and preparation.
Looking back, I realize those early experiences offered lessons that extended far beyond the farm.
Our lives have seasons of planting, growing, harvesting, and beginning again. And every season leaves us with wisdom worth gathering.
October is also my birthday month, a natural time for me to reflect on the life I've lived, the woman I've become, and the possibilities waiting to unfold.
As a three-time breast cancer thriver, I have an additional reason to appreciate the preciousness of time and the importance of recognizing what truly matters.
I've learned that the experiences we accumulate throughout our lives are much like the harvest gathered from the fields.
Some bring abundance and celebration.
Others emerge from seasons of uncertainty, disappointment, or unexpected challenges.
But each becomes part of the larger story of who we are.
The question is whether we recognize the wisdom we've gathered along the way.
The Harvest of Your Soul Story
Think about the many experiences that have shaped your life.
Perhaps you remember the excitement of pursuing a dream, celebrating an accomplishment, or discovering a new opportunity.
Maybe you recall a relationship that changed your perspective or a decision that led you in an unexpected direction.
And undoubtedly, there have been experiences you never would have chosen.
Illness. Loss. Career transitions. Family challenges. Disappointments that required you to reconsider what you believed was possible.
All these experiences become threads in the fabric of your Soul Story.
Yet how often do we take time to reflect on what they have taught us?
We're frequently so busy moving from one responsibility to the next that we overlook the wisdom we've earned.
We focus on what remains unfinished rather than appreciating how far we've come.
We remember our mistakes more readily than the courage it took to try.
And sometimes, we minimize experiences that have profoundly influenced the women we've become.
What if you began looking at your life not as a collection of accomplishments and setbacks, but as a harvest of wisdom waiting to be discovered?
Awareness: Recognizing the Wisdom You've Earned
The first of my three Soul Story Truths is Awareness.
Awareness invites us to observe our lives with curiosity and compassion.
Rather than immediately judging our experiences as successes or failures, we can begin asking what they reveal about our values, strengths, and priorities.
For me, this has been particularly meaningful throughout my breast cancer experiences.
When I first heard the words "You have breast cancer" in 2001, I couldn't have imagined how profoundly that diagnosis would influence my life.
Facing breast cancer three times has brought uncertainty, difficult decisions, and moments when fear threatened to overshadow possibility.
I certainly wouldn't suggest that illness is something we should celebrate or that every painful experience must contain a hidden blessing.
I can recognize the lessons I've discovered while navigating those chapters.
I've learned the importance of asking for support - both physical and spiritual.
I've become more aware of the value of a meaningful relationship with myself and with others.
I've developed greater compassion for women facing uncertainty.
And I've strengthened my commitment to living with intention rather than postponing what matters most.
These lessons didn't erase the challenges.
They became part of the wisdom I carried forward.
Awareness allows us to recognize that even when we cannot change our circumstances, we can become more conscious of how those experiences influence our perspective.
The Stories We Continue Telling Ourselves
As we move through life, we develop beliefs about who we are and what we're capable of accomplishing.
Some beliefs encourage us.
Others quietly limit our possibilities.
Perhaps you've told yourself:
"I'm too old to begin something new."
"I've missed my opportunity."
"My experiences aren't important enough to share."
"Who would care about what I have to say?"
"I'm not a writer." (This is the one I'll challenge anytime I hear it!)
These thoughts can become so familiar that we accept them as facts.
Are they?
Or are they simply stories we've repeated for so long that we've forgotten to question them?
This is where the second Soul Story Truth becomes especially powerful.
Rewrite Your Story: Decide What Deserves to Stay
Harvesting involves more than gathering.
It also requires sorting.
Some things we preserve and carry into the next season.
Others have served their purpose and can be released.
Our personal stories are much the same.
Over time, we accumulate expectations, assumptions, and beliefs that may no longer reflect who we are.
Rewriting Your Story invites us to reconsider the meaning we've attached to our experiences.
We cannot change what happened.
But we can change how we understand its place in our lives.
I cannot erase three breast cancer diagnoses.
However, I can choose not to define myself solely through those experiences.
My Soul Story includes so much more.
I am a wife, mother, grandmother, author, journalist, entrepreneur, and Soul Story Mentor.
My life contains creativity, relationships, professional accomplishments, meaningful connections, and dreams I continue to pursue.
Cancer is part of my story.
It is not the entirety of who I am.
The same is true for you.
You are more than the difficult experiences you've navigated.
More than the mistakes you've made.
More than the expectations others have placed upon you.
Your Soul Story includes every moment of courage, curiosity, compassion, and determination that has helped you become the woman you are today.
What Are You Ready to Release?
Autumn reminds us that releasing something doesn't necessarily mean losing something valuable.
Trees release their leaves as part of preparing for another season of growth.
We can approach our lives with similar intention.
Perhaps you're ready to release the belief that your voice doesn't matter.
Maybe you're ready to stop measuring your accomplishments against someone else's expectations.
Or perhaps you're ready to give yourself permission to pursue a dream you've postponed for years.
Rewriting your story doesn't require dramatic changes.
Sometimes it begins with a single question:
What belief about myself am I ready to reconsider?
From there, new possibilities can emerge.
You may discover that an experience you once viewed only as a setback also helped you develop a strength you now rely upon.
You may recognize that your unconventional journey has given you insights that make your perspective valuable.
Or you may begin to understand why certain experiences have inspired the passion behind your personal or professional mission.
The wisdom was there all along.
You simply needed an opportunity to recognize it.
Your Soul Story Writing Invitation
Find a quiet moment with your journal, a favorite pen, and perhaps a comforting cup of tea.
Imagine you're standing in the fields of your own life, surrounded by the harvest of everything you've experienced.
Consider these questions:
Awareness: What three experiences have taught me the most important lessons about myself? What wisdom did I gain?
Reflection: What recurring themes appear throughout my life? What might they reveal about my values and purpose?
Rewriting Your Story: What outdated belief or expectation am I ready to release? What more empowering truth could take its place?
Moving Forward: What wisdom do I want to carry into the next season of my life?
Write freely, without worrying about finding the perfect words.
Notice what emerges.
You may discover connections between experiences that once seemed unrelated.
You may recognize strengths you've overlooked.
And you may begin to appreciate just how much wisdom your life has given you.
Your Next Chapter Begins with Awareness
October's harvest reminds us that every season contributes something to the larger story of our lives.
There are seasons when we plant seeds without knowing what will grow.
Seasons when we nurture dreams and relationships.
Seasons when unexpected storms challenge our confidence.
And seasons when we finally recognize the wisdom we've been gathering.
The beauty of our Soul Stories is that they continue to evolve.
We can honor our past without allowing it to limit our future.
We can appreciate what we've learned while remaining open to what comes next.
And we can choose which lessons, beliefs, and values deserve a place in our next chapter.
Your life has already given you an extraordinary harvest of wisdom.
The question is: What will you choose to carry forward?
