Follow the Breadcrumbs of Joy: Let Delight Show You What Comes Next
When did joy become something we had to earn?
After the work is finished.
After everyone else's needs have been met.
After the house is organized.
After the goal is achieved.
After we've been productive enough.
Then, perhaps, we can have a little joy.
But what if joy isn't the reward waiting at the end of the journey?
What if joy is part of the roadmap?
The third Soul Story truth is Choose Joy.
Choosing joy isn't about ignoring what hurts or pretending life is always wonderful.
It's about recognizing that delight, curiosity, creativity, and pleasure carry information.
Joy leaves breadcrumbs.
Our job is to notice them.
What Lights You Up?
Think about the moments when you lose track of time.
Maybe you're writing.
Gardening.
Walking beside the ocean.
Painting.
Reading.
Cooking.
Listening to music.
Talking with a dear friend.
Playing with a child.
Traveling somewhere new.
Sitting quietly with a journal and a cup of tea.
These moments may appear insignificant when measured against our endless lists of responsibilities.
But your soul may see them differently.
They are clues.
They show you where you feel most alive.
Follow Curiosity Before Certainty
We often believe we need a five-year plan before we take the first step.
Joy rarely works that way.
Joy whispers:
Try this.
Go there.
Call her.
Write that.
Learn something new.
Pick up the paintbrush.
Take the class.
Wear the beautiful scarf.
Buy yourself the flowers.
The invitation may seem small.
Follow it anyway.
One breadcrumb leads to another.
Looking back, you may discover those seemingly insignificant choices created an entirely new chapter.
Choosing Joy Is Also Rewriting Your Story
Perhaps you've carried a story that says responsible women always put themselves last.
Or that creativity is frivolous.
Or that rest must be earned.
Or that pursuing something simply because you love it is selfish.
What if you rewrote that story?
What if joy became one of the ways you honor yourself?
What if choosing what makes you feel alive isn't indulgent at all?
What if it's part of coming home to yourself?
Your September Writing Invitation
Create a list titled:
20 Things That Bring Me Joy
Include the tiny things.
A favorite pen.
Fresh flowers.
A colorful notebook.
A cup of tea.
A phone call with someone who makes you laugh.
Music in the kitchen.
Sunlight through a window.
A walk outside.
Then circle three things you could easily bring into your life this week.
Choose one.
Do it.
And notice how you feel.
Your Soul Story isn't only written through life's struggles.
It is also written through delight, laughter, creativity, connection, beauty, and wonder.
As September invites you to notice where you are, rewrite what no longer fits, and gather the wisdom you've gained, don't forget one more essential question:
What brings me joy now?
Listen carefully to the answer.
Then follow the breadcrumb.
It may be pointing toward the next chapter your soul is ready to write.
Together, these four blogs could also become a September email series, with each article ending in a related Sanctuary prompt and a gentle invitation to engage with your Soul Story work.
